What would you do if you were going blind and had no way to let people know?
That’s something happening in my house right now and it’s not me going through it. It’s my dog Murdock.
Back in 2021, my wife and I were asked if we were interested in getting a puppy. We said of course and we picked out this very little gray and white Pitbull. What we didn’t know at the time is that the dog we picked was always with another dog from the litter. After the puppies were all taken to a vet to be checked out we found out why. The dog we picked was helping the other dog as he was blind.
It was suggested that this blind puppy be put down. Luckily, our friends said no and we was decided we could not separate them. So we drove across the state and picked up two little dogs.
Once back home, we had the puppies checked out again. This time the news was different. He wasn’t fully blind, though there was something.
He was given the name Murdock after the blind superhero, Matt Murdock also known as Daredevil. Now with a name he grew, he played, and he continued to follow his brother around everywhere.
It’s been a few years since we brought Murdock home, and much like me, you can tell his vision is gradually getting worse as well. He bumps into his kennel, sometimes finding his water bowl is a challenge, coming inside from the backyard he struggles with the change in lights. All things I fully understand.
The only difference is I can ask for help, he can’t. It’s such a sad and scary thing when you think of it. Being trapped within your own body with zero way to explain what is truly going on.
I feel for him, because I know the struggle he is facing as I am facing it too. But looking at him you’d never know it, he’s still just like that same puppy we brought home years ago just has a little more in common with guy that gives him pets.
